History of Phi Nu

In 1971 a group of men who lived in the Peekskill area would see each other and of course they would greet each other as fraternity brothers. Some had just moved to the area, while others were already living there.

Peekskill, New York and the surrounding area at that time was a predominately white-collar town with most of the citizens working in IBM or major firms in New York City. Brothers Sherman Burks,Robert Duke, Charlie Miller, Rich Shelton, and Ted Childs Jr. truly believed and lived our creed of “Friendship is Essential to the Soul” and saw a need to establish a Chapter to help support the community.

On April 10, 1972, Phi Nu Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Incorporated, the 729th graduate chapter, received its official Charter with charter members consisted of Brothers Sherman Burks, RobertDuke, Charlie Miller, Rich Shelton, and Ted Childs Jr. The chapter was off and running by initiating their first line in 1974. The first line initiated on June 29, 1974 consisted of Brothers John Dunston, Jr., JosephYongue, James Morgan, Rudy Collins, Charles Bolden, and Robert Morgan.

Since 1974, Phi Nu Chapterhas brought many men from various walks of life into Omega's folds. The chapter membership strongly believed in community service and various members served on various boards in the city, key positionsin the school system, and strong supporters of NAACP.

Between 1974 and 1993, the chapter crossed 9 lines and initiated 51 Brothers. There is a bit of history that is not so evident during this period. Phi Nu initiated its first undergraduates in 1977 at Iona College. Also during this period there were many noteworthy Brothers such as Henry Carnage Jr (1975), Lieutenant General (Retired) William “Kip” Ward (1979), and Major General (Retired) James E. Donald (1981). There were many other brothers who are an integral part of Phi Nu history such asTom Green, PI Chapter ‘62.

Throughout the intervening years, Phi Nu Chapter was heavily involved in the local community and in fulfilling the Cardinal Principles (Manhood, Scholarship, Perseverance, and Uplift) of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc.In 1993, several Omega men including Brothers Ted Childs, Michael Miner, now-retired Lieutenant Colonel Miner, Doctor Barry Pryce, now-retired Major General Pryce, Doctor Eugene Egerton now retired Colonel Egerton, and Brother Doctor Larry Perkins now-retired Colonel Perkins approached the United States Military Academy’s Commandant and eloquently explained the values of the Fraternity, and how the Fraternity complimented West Point’s mission and history of success.

Using Colonel CharlesYoung, United States Military Academy Class of 1889 graduate, and the first inductee into the ranks of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. in 1993, the Commandant agreed and saw the value of Omega Psi PhiFraternity Inc. This decision marked the first time for Cadets to join a Divine-nine Greek LetterOrganization at West Point.

On April 16, 1994, marked the Charter Line of undergraduate attachment of the United States Military Academy consisting of Clayton Nicholas, Abel Young, Zebedee Freeman III,Troy McHenry, and Johnell Holly.

Since 1994 until present day, there have been 21 lines and 71 brothers initiated as the Phi Nu Chapterunder graduate attachment of the United States Military Academy. Omega men from West Point have served across the world and are currently deployed to multiple countries. There are also many Phi Nu Brothers who have pursued other careers serving in numerous senior executive roles in Fortune 500 companies.

The chapter's long legacy of its active members continues to be enduring Friendships, Loyalty, Community Involvement, Commitment to Service and Pride in our Achievements. However, it'sthe fraternity's cardinal principles of MANHOOD, SCHOLARSHIP, PERSEVERANCE, and UPLIFT that are the cornerstone of Phi Nu Chapter's foundation today.
