History of Nu Tau

Nu Tau chapter was granted a charter during the latter part of 1959. (The official fraternity history book cites 1960 as the charter year.)  There were originally eight charter members:

Dr. Edmund Oneal, Sr. (deceased)
Dr. Joseph Brawley Robinson (deceased)
Emile Drysdale
Don White
Dr. Sam Jefferson
Earle Goodwin (deceased)
Ralph Mason
Ignatius Collier

The original impetus for starting a chapter in Albany came from the commonly shared interest and concerns of these eight men; particularly in the area of social participation. Meetings were initially conducted on a monthly basis for the purpose of planning various social activities for the members, their families and friends.  These meetings were frequently followed by a variety of social gatherings which were designed to provide a wholesome social outlet for the participants.

It wasn't long before these men of prominence began to realize that they had a greater part to play in the uplift of their community.  They began to expand chapter activities to promote a more visible presence for Omega in the Capital District. In addition to initiating new members, Nu Tau also sponsored such annual programs as:

1. Annual Spring Formal Affair
2. Annual Founders Day Program
3. Selection of an Omega Man of the Year
4. Selection of a Citizen of the Year (community-wide)
5. Annual Scholarship Awards to area students
6. A Speaker's forum on topics related to the black community

Although chapter records are sketchy, there is some historical evidence that Nu Tau experienced periods of inactivity due to attrition among members; particularly during the mid-60's and ‘70's. None the less, chapter records indicate that the list of past and present members included men of tremendous professional accomplishment in New York State.

The history of Nu Tau Chapter also indicates that the vision of those original eight members was reaffirmed with the initiation of the “Pacesetters” line in 1976.  Since that time, the legacy of goodwill and good deeds among men of similar interests and ideals has continued to flourish in the Capital District.
