History of Kappa Omicron

At a meeting in the home of Brother Harry Denny, Jr. in early 1948, it was decided that there was a need for a new Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Chapter in New York City . Brothers Denny, Jr., Howard Day, Herschel “Ripp” Day, Bertrand W. Green, Augustus Jenkins, Harry Jefferson, and Clarence Lee, all men of attainment, same ideas of fellowship, scholarship, and manhood undertook the task of building a new chapter.

On September 25, 1948, on a night described as bright with the stars clearly visible, a dream came true. Kappa Omicron became the one hundredth star in the Omega constellation.

The first meeting of Kappa Omicron was held that fateful September 25 th date. Brother Mifflin T. Gibbs, 2 nd District Representative, traveled on this day to 601 East 167 th St . , Bronx , NY – the home of Brother Harry Denny, Jr, and presented the Brothers their coveted charter and gave a lecture on the duties and responsibilities of each officer and member. Brother Gibbs renewed their allegiance by administering once again the sacred oath of Omega.

Kappa Omicron's base of operations would remain in the Bronx until the early 1970's when the Chapter purchased a fraternity house at its current location of 528 West 150 th St . , New York , NY (honorably named the Harry Denny, Jr. House in 1994). Its opening was celebrated with a two day festival and open house.

Kappa Omicron has been a leader in the fraternity since its founding in 1948. In addition to meeting every mandated program of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., it also includes presentation of college scholarships, charitable fundraisers, a five borough food pantry project, and the promotion of the good works of community leaders. Its members have been leaders within the ranks of the fraternity as well. Kappa Omicron has had three International Officers, Brother George E. Meares, 26 th Grand Basileus, Brother Paul N. Johnson, 2 nd Vice Grand Basileus; and Brother Jeff L. Greenup, Grand Counselor. The Chapter has also had many Brothers serve various offices on the District Level.
